Description:
Thallus is reddish purple, with a dozen or more hollow blades arising from the margin of a central linear sac, all tapering to a short stipe. The thallus, attached by a small discoidal holdfast, reaches 8 cm (3 in) tall but is usually shorter. Habitat This annual or biennial species usually grows on rock (including cobble) in the low intertidal to upper subtidal of protected to semi-exposed habitats. Similar taxa: Palmaria and Opuntiella are not hollow; Halosaccion spp. are not compressed.
