Description:
The dark red to pale pink, partially hollow, contorted, and tubular thallus reaches 27 cm (11 in) tall, with a single order of slightly narrower and shorter, irregularly placed branches. Habitat: A spring annual often gone by June, it is found on rock in mid intertidal tidepools of semi-exposed to protected habitats. Similar taxa: Hollow forms of Palmaria callophylloides have a more papery texture and are usually more proliferously branched.
Comments:
The ocurrence of this species in the western North Pacific needs to be checked; species there are still identified as D. contorta, the North Atlantic species
