Description:
Thallus is a dark red blade, entire, often somewhat wrinkled, tapering to a short, slender stipe and minute discoidal holdfast. It is usually less than 30 cm (12 in) tall but can attain 1 m (39 in). Although it can be somewhat shiny in appearance, it is never slippery, and veins and midrib are lacking. Habitat: This uncommon species is a biennial; it grows on pebbles in soft sediment in the extreme low intertidal and upper subtidal of protected or semi-protected habitats.
