Description:
Thallus is dark red to dusky pink, crisp, shiny, reaching 40 cm (16 in) tall. Blades are oval to elongate, with midrib and conspicuous, branched lateral veins; margins are undulate, sometimes with spine-like teeth. Holdfast is discoidal or of ribbonlike branches. Reproductive structures are on bladelets along midrib or veins. Habitat: This perennial is usually found in the subtidal zone (0-20 m) on rock or other algae in semi-exposed to exposed habitats. Similar taxa: Congregatocarpus kurilensis, Yendonia crassifolia differ in anatomical and reproductive features and are much less common.
