Description:
Thallus is dark brown, thick, reaching 1.5 m (5 ft) tall. The holdfast is branched, the stipe somewhat rigid, and the blade often split down to 10 cm above its base. Mucilage ducts occur near the surface of stipe. Habitat: This perennial is found on rock in the very low intertidal to shallow subtidal. Similar taxa: Saccharina subsimplex
