Description:
Thallus is brownish red to dark red blade, sometimes entire but more frequently split nearly to base of blade, which can reach 30 cm (12 in) tall. Blade surface is smooth or with tiny projections (verrucose), making the surface feel like sandpaper. The base of the stipe, if present, is often nearly colorless; holdfast is small, discoidal. Habitat: Species are probably perennial; they are mostly subtidal in a variety of habitats. Similar taxa: Schizymenia
