Thallus is saccate, reddish purple to yellowish brown, tapering to a short stipe and a small discoidal holdfast and reaching 15 cm (6 in) tall but usually shorter. Tiny pores allow seawater inside the sac to spray outward when the thallus is squeezed. Habitat: This annual usually grows in clumps on rock or epiphytically on other algae in the mid to low intertidal of semi-protected to exposed habitats [high intertidal patch-forming and tidepool specimens are probably not this species]. Similar taxa: Halosaccion spp.
