Description: Thallus is dark brown to light tan, soft and mucilaginous, with a hairy (rarely smooth) appearance due to the many long pigmented hairs, which together with the much shorter (5-9 cells long), pigmented assimilatory filaments arise from the large-celled colorless medulla. Branching is irregular to several orders. Habitat: The species occurs in the mid to low intertidal on semi-protected shores along the outer coast. Similar taxa: Chordaria
